Giant Jelly
Interaction Design
Creating a delightful interaction with something you can’t normally interact with
For this project we were given free reign to decide on a project idea that resonated with our team and made use of the skills we had gained throughout the course of the class. The only restriction we had was that the demo should involve a bilateral, multi-sensory interaction meaning the user should be able to interact with our creation and vice versa. To brainstorm ideas for this project we came up with multiple wacky and fun concepts and then we narrowed on the one we thought would create the most enjoyable interaction for users. We decided to create an interactive jellyfish art installation. The jellyfish is intentionally large in size and is placed in a dark environment, simulating the deep sea. Once the user approaches the jellyfish the user's presence is sensed thus triggering the motion of the jellyfish’s body. This motion was created through origami and the use of servos. In order to make this an extraordinary experience we wanted to allow the user to interact with the tentacles of the jellyfish, an interaction that is typically avoided. Upon touch, the tentacles of the jellyfish light up in different colors. Overall, we created this piece because we wanted to explore the beauty of unapproachable life.
